Western Red Cedar is available with a little extra lead time. Prices
for log walls made of cedar are more expensive than most other wood
species for several reasons, one being that Cedar stocks are seriously
depleted in the northwest, and therefore simply cost more. And, because
cedar logs generally have much more taper along their length, they require
more labor to handcraft.
Although long renowned for rot and insect resistance, it takes careful
selection of growing regions along the northwest coastal areas to find
cedar that lives up to its reputation. Fast growing cedar from inland
forests do not have the high tannic acid content which gives cedar its
best rot and bug resistance. If you order your loghome made with cedar,
Biglog and Timber Homes will use only the finest grade of coastal-grown
cedar logs, assuring that you get the durability you want.
